Wor Bella – Public talk with playwright Ed Waugh

Thursday 10th March 2022 at 7.00pm

A public talk by Geordie, internationally produced playwright Ed Waugh about his forthcoming play: the incredible story of Blyth Spartans Munitions Ladies, who took women’s football during WW1 by storm.

Blyth Spartans may have stunned the world of professional football 40 years ago when the team reached the 5th round of the FA Cup, but a lesser documented success was when Blyth Spartans Ladies won the Munitionettes’ Cup 100 years ago. They selflessly saved the war effort on the home front and, despite working 60 hours a week, the munitionettes still found time to play football for wartime charities.

Wor Bella is the phenomenal story of how Blyth Spartans Ladies won the Munitionettes cup in 1918, with Bella Reay (“Wor Bella”) scoring 133 goals in 30 matches. The show is touring locally in March and April 2022. For tour information visit www.worbella.co.uk
